Inside the Actors Studio: James Lipton’s 10-questions
1. What is your favorite word?
I love the word “Play”.
My grandson is learning to play hockey, and one afternoon while I was waiting for him to finish changing out of his gear into his regular clothes, I sat on a bench at the ice arena and looked up and saw the banner that is shown below. It is from the American Development Model, ADM, which is an outstanding coaching organization centered on developing the skills to succeed in the sport of hockey.(See http://www.admkids.com/page/show/903706-mission-overview )
It reads, “Let them play, let them have fun, let them fail, let them learn, let them succeed—let them be kids”, and it was like a shot of adrenaline to my heart—I thought it was good advice for adults, too—we should all strive to keep that wonder and joy in our hearts in the way we live our lives. Play is my favorite word—it has craftsmanship in its essence—it has Joy.
2. What is your least favorite word?
Regrets. Sorta says it all, doesn’t it.
3. What turns you on?
Flowers and a mouth that tastes good when I kiss it. (Read my poem “Chanel No. 5 & Love Potion No.9”.
4. What turns you off?
A rude demeanor and people who are obnoxious and overbearing.
5. What sound do you love?
The sound of the wind.
6. What sound do you hate?
Voices in hateful anger and screams of fear.
7. What is your favorite curse word?
I guess it is not really a curse word, but “Jag off”—I think that may be a phrase of Pittsburgh origin, correct me if I am wrong—but I like it because it is such a hands off way to call someone what I really think they are—which is an asshole. (laughing).
I have to admit that I love the book “Creative Cursing”…I don’t think I could have ever come up with something like “wanker wad” all on my own.
In all complete truth—I have a truck driver cussing mouth when I am pacing the room.
8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
A Master Painter; an Explorer; a Naturalist, an Archaeologist…yeah, I know…that’s more than one.
Or else a drop-you-to-your-knees singer.
9. What profession would you not like to do?
Anything political. While I have great admiration for nobility and honor, and those same intentions are great undercurrents in my being, I am not sure how much nobility and honor is left in the world of politics these days. It does make for strange bedfellows, does it not?
10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
“Why are all of those bells ringing, Diane, My Dear? Well, just as you always believed, it really IS a wonderful life. The bells are ringing for you, Diane—here are your wings, My Angel.
Yes, every time a bell rings an angel DOES get its wings!”
Of course, this is while the Spirit-Souls of every dog I have ever loved and lost are jumping all over me in that ecstasy only a loving pet can give you, and I see my Mother and Father walking towards me in their young and healthy spirits.
